Starting an exercise routine can be a daunting task. As we all know, there are a lot of ways for a great routine to lapse into inactivity if you fail to be diligent. However, staying on top of your physical health is not as hard as it may seem. All it really takes to stay fit is knowledge, dedication, and a little mental strength. Below are a few tips on starting—and staying with—your new exercise routine.

  1. Realistic goals are one of the most important aspects of a great routine. While obviously it is always best to have goals in mind while working out, sometimes it can be detrimental or even dangerous to set our expectations too high. For example, “lose 5 pounds in 3 weeks” is a perfectly reasonable goal, but “lose 30 pounds in 3 weeks” is likely to leave you exhausted and disappointed.
  2. Making sure that you exercise at least a little each day is important. Even if some days you choose only to do stretches, it is best not to take long breaks from exercising. Give yourself a chance to rest, but make sure your exercise stays frequent and regular.
  3. Partnering up is one good way to stay on track, on the condition that you trust your partner to be as committed—or preferably more committed—than you. If you prefer, groups of three or more can work as well, on the condition that you stay organized.
  4. Find ways to enjoy exercising. If you love listening to music, take your iPod with you while you run. If you like nature, take a run through the park. If you enjoy spending time with your family, organize group work-out activities.
  5. Eating right is the only way to ensure that your exercise is as fruitful as it can possibly be. The diet of someone who is exercising should contain a wide variety of foods, particularly those high in protein. Whole grains, nuts, meat—in reasonable quantities—and raw produce are great choices for a healthy exercise diet.
  6. Don’t strive for perfection. Be prepared to fall of the wagon now and then. It is impossible to always stay on top of your schedule, particularly if you have children, school, or a demanding job to take care of as well. The only way to be successful is to jump right back on the wagon each time you fall off, and refuse to get discouraged.
  7. Use technology to improve your efficiency. There are a number of great programs and applications you can use to ensure that you are achieving your full potential. These can help you keep track of calories, remind you to exercise when it is time, or locate healthy places to eat.
  8. Be patient. The most real and lasting changes will always come about as the result of long-term diet and exercise changes. Whereas it may be tempting to buy into the idea that you can transform your body entirely overnight—or in two weeks for that matter—it is simply unrealistic. Getting fit and losing weight is easy, as long as you stick with it for as long as it takes.
